Chapter Nine

Kate parked her Fiat in the courtyard behind the castle, unloaded some of her purchases and staggered into the kitchen. “Miles, I’m home.”

“Here, let me help you, Miss… Katrina.” Miles threw down his oven mitts and lifted a couple of packages out of her arms. “Goodness, what have you got here?”

“Oh, Miles, Suzanne is amazing. She ran me back and forth all over Chesterfield. We searched out furniture, bedding, rugs, light fittings, mirrors and lamps. Then we went to her workshop and she showed me the curtains, bedspread and canopy that’ll go above the bed. It’s magnificent. I can’t wait to show Caleb.”

Miles gave her a doubtful look. “I think you’ll find Sir Caleb is not particularly interested in curtains and light fittings, Miss.”

Giggling, Kate dropped the rest of her parcels on the bench. “You’re probably right, but I love it. Where’s Caleb anyway?”

“He spent most of the day out walking the estate and countryside. He then came back and searched the turrets. It appears you have helped him fulfil two conditions of the curse. Now he needs to find his mother’s Celtic dirk to realize the next condition.”

“How can I help?”

“You are helping, my dear. It was your touch and kiss that infused life into Sir Caleb. But I must warn you; it’s your innocence that’s behind it. To end the curse, Sir Caleb needs to find a descendant of the Romani gypsies or he’ll return to the portrait.”

Guilt swamped Kate “I know what you say is true, but I can help him if he’ll let me.”

“No, my dear. You must keep him at arm’s length. He has one choice if he is to regain his freedom. I wish it were otherwise for both of you.”

“It can be.” Kate willed herself to be strong. But what if I lose him anyway? What if he hates me? Oh, God, what if I make things worse? “Miles, there’s something I need to tell you and it’s going to knock your socks off.”

“I presume that means it’s something remarkable or shocking?”

Kate took a shaky breath. “I’m not only your son’s descendant. I’m also Syeria’s descendant. Your eldest son was her husband and they had four sons and a daughter. She was made the guardian of the diary. I have Romani blood. I can save Caleb.”

“Good God.” Miles reached for a stool. “Why didn’t you say something earlier?”

“Caleb is angry with the Romani people. He said if he could get his hands on one, he’d kill them. He hates them.”

Pulling out another stool, Kate sat and clutched one of Miles’ hands. “The Romani people believe good and bad actions determine one’s future. They believe not all events occur by chance and the spirits of their Romani ancestors play a key role in maintaining balance and punishments. Caleb and I are meant to be together. I just don’t know how to tell him.”

“Don’t say anything for now. I think it would be wise to wait until the tradespeople finish their renovations, in case Sir Caleb reacts badly.
